چکیده

Distance has long been viewed as a barrier to population migration, and there are numerous studies that identify the existence of a "dis tance decay effect" in migration and in other types of spatial interac tion [5;8]. Traditionally the relationship between distance and migra tion has been examined with the use of the well-known gravity mode!, which is based on an analogy with Newtonian mechanics. Wilson, however, [32;33] was among the first to show that gravity-type inter action models can be derived, alternatively, from either statistical mechanics or information theoretic methods, utilizing the concept of entropy maximization. In general, the method of entropy maximiza tion allows unbiased estimates to be made of the form of probability distributions, given limited prior information [18;21;30]. These esti mates can then be employed in mathematical models of the system of interest that are to be tested against the observed data. In addition, the introduction of information in the form of constraints allows greater model flexibility and also overcomes the internaI consistency problem inherent in the classical gravity model [13;20]. As is the case with classical gravity models, information theoretic entropy maximizing models emphasize the role of the distance variable

Modeling Interprovincial Migration in China, 1985–2000

Using data from China’s 1990 and 2000 censuses, this paper examines interprovincial migration by describing its spatial patterns and estimating models based on the gravity approach. Between the censuses, interprovincial migration increased considerably in size and became more unidirectional and concentrated. Modeling results highlight the role of regional economic disparity and migration stock,...

An Investigation on the Parameters Influencing the Pounding in Highway Bridges

The present aim of this study is to investigate the effect of different parameters influencing pounding in highway bridges. Pounding is the result of a collision between two parts of the deck and/or the deck and abutments at the separation distance during the earthquake.  In the present study, the period ratio of the adjacent frames, ground motion spatial variation, and soil-structure interacti...

INTERPROVINCIAL MIGRATION IN CHINA: THE EFFECTS OF INVESTMENT, MIGRANT NETWORKS AND THE “GO WEST” POLICY by

Since the late 1980s, the Chinese government has gradually eased restrictions to internal migration. This easing, along with rapid growth of the Chinese economy, substantial increases in foreign and domestic investments, and policies encouraging development in the Western provinces, have greatly stimulated internal migration. Earlier studies have established that since the 1980s, migration patt...

Interprovincial Migration , Population Redistribution , and Regional Development in China : 1990 and 2000 Census

Until recently, migration has had a limited role to play in China’s space economy because of central-planning logic and mechanisms. Mobility increases and economic restructuring since the 1980s, however, call for new conceptualizations of migration. Using interprovincial migration data from China’s 1990 and 2000 censuses, I analyze migration rates, migration effectiveness, population growth, ne...

Investigating the Evolution of Spatial Structure Patterns of Migration in West-Azerbaijan Province

Migration and quality of redistribution of population across country is one of the main factors that planners take into account to control population and guide its movements to economic poles. Scientific recognition of migration phenomenon is important for managing and policy making in the country. These movements change migration pattern, in a way that along with increase in population and the...
